5 Best Vegan Restaurants in Santa Monica

  |     |   Uncategorized

Santa Monica is an active and health-conscious city and a place where you can find a great restaurant for whatever it is you do (or don’t eat.) In some cities, vegans and vegetarians have slim pickings when it comes to where they can eat. Not in Santa Monica. Here, you’ll find top-rated restaurants that specialize in plant-based menus and an atmosphere that advocates for environmental sustainability.

Check out these five popular vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Santa Monica:

AVO Café

AVO Cafe is run by plant-based enthusiasts on a mission to make it easy and delicious to lead a vegan lifestyle. They also partner with popular food delivery services so you can have their fresh sandwiches, wraps, salads, “burgers” and other specialty items delivered right to your Santa Monica apartment or business.

We recommend: For breakfast, the breakfast burrito is a must. Overflowing with fresh veggies and your choice of tofu, this burrito comes with chips and salsa and will give you tons of energy first thing in the morning. For lunch and dinner, the superfood bowls are always a good choice (we love the Gone To India Bowl) and the Mediterranean Wrap is also a local favorite. They also offer coffee drinks, smoothies, and veggie burgers. Fun fact: AVO stands for All Vegan Organic!

FIG Restaurant

While FIG isn’t exclusively vegan, it does offer a wide selection of plant-based options on its gourmet menu. Their commitment to bringing fresh seasonal cuisine to Santa Monica is what makes it a popular place for a good meal. The dream team behind FIG’s incredible dishes prides itself on weekly visits to local farmers' markets to hand select the best, locally grown ingredients for all of its dishes.

We recommend: The Farmer’s Market Salad is bursting with fresh colors and flavors, all handpicked from local vendors across the city. The green lentil soup is also a good choice (hold the croutons.) Everything on their Wood Oven Roasted menu is vegan/vegetarian friendly.

800 Degrees

800 degrees is a small chain restaurant that specializes in wood oven pizzas. We love that their menu lets you know exactly what pizzas and ingredients are vegan/vegetarian approved so you have all the information you need before you order. Made from scratch dough, fresh ingredients, and the smokiness you can only get from a wood oven, these pizzas speak for themselves. They’re also a business committed to environmental sustainability and pride themselves on using only local and organic ingredients whenever possible.

We recommend: One of the best vegan options is The Tartufo. It has Bianca, trued pecorino, wild mushrooms, roasted garlic, fresh mozzarella, and wild arugula. For vegetarians, we suggest the Impossible Deluxe. Feeling creative? Create your own pizza with your favorite veggies (and plant-based meats and cheeses) from their impressive ingredient list.

Veggie Grill

Veggie Grill has perfected the art of taking the classics (think burgers, wings, sandwiches, and tacos) and making them vegan. With a great (heated) patio and an enticing rewards program, this plant-based eatery is a popular local hang-out spot. The mission of Veggie Grill is to bring more plant-based food to more people, and their giant portions, gorgeous plating, and fresh ingredients make it easy.

We recommend: All of their salads are incredible, but the Korean Kimchi Beef Bowl is where it’s at. They are also known for their Spicy Crab Cake Sandwich and Southwestern Nachos. They’ve got a great kids menu too, and also serve beer and wine.

True Food Kitchen

Pet friendly, plant-based, and just a cool place to hang out, True Food Kitchen is a Santa Monica staple. It can get pretty busy on the weekends, but it's worth the wait. The Santa Monica location is run by a chef-lead team that is passionate about the science behind good food. They are dedicated to sourcing their ingredients with integrity and are committed to only partnering with growers that share the same values. Dine-in and carry-out are available and offer delivery so you can have the fresh food brought right to your door.

We recommend: You’re going to want to take a picture of the Fall Pesto Pasta before you eat it, and nobody would blame you. It’s gorgeous. The Grilled Chicken Avocado Wrap and the Ancient Grains Bowl are popular options, and you can’t leave without trying the Squash Pie for dessert.

Bottom Line

Santa Monica is a great place to be vegan. Even restaurants that aren't specifically vegan restaurants are usually more than happy to adjust their ingredients and cooking methods to meet your dietary needs. Even better, many of these vegan restaurants are just minutes from high-end Santa Monica apartments for rent. If you're thinking about moving to this health-conscious city (and trying all the vegan restaurants!) schedule a tour of NMS 1539 Fourth today
